Dear Director Quintero,
We write asking that you expedite the realignment of Monument Road, the vehicle road that runs through Border Field State Park (BFSP). This road connects visitors to Monument Mesa, the site of the historic cross-border meeting place known as Friendship Park. Friendship Park is a symbol of international solidarity and a unique resource to the millions of Californians who live in extended families that span the US-Mexico border.
As you know, BFSP has been subject to seasonal closures for years due to flooding and disrepair of Monument Road. And this one-of-a-kind State Park has now been closed entirely to the public for the last 18 months. These closures are especially disheartening because designs needed to reroute Monument Road have been available to State Parks staff since at least 2015.
Director Quintero, we know you care about Border Field State Park. Thank you for visiting the site last fall, and thank you for helping to ensure that this project is now fully funded. We urge you now to direct your staff to accelerate their current work, expedite the environmental review process, and build the new road as soon as possible! The project is officially named the “Border Field State Park Resilience Access and Habitat Restoration Project”.
Especially in times of division like these, restoring year-round vehicle access to Monument Road and Friendship Park is of urgent importance to the people of California.
